Ten children who were found living in squalid conditions in their Northern California home had allegedly been tortured by their parents for 'sadistic purposes' and shot with pellet guns.

Their parents Jonathan Allen, 29, and Ina Rogers, 30, were subsequently arrested and charged with neglect and torture.

The children, some of whom had visible scarring, told investigators that they had suffered puncture wounds, burns and bruises. They also showed injuries consistent with being shot by pellet guns.

Police had conducted a six-week investigation and said nine of the 10 children had been tortured as far back as 2014.

'I'm horrified by the statements that were given by these children,' Sharon Henry, a prosecutor with the Solano County district attorney's office, told the LA Times.

She added that the children, who were home-schooled, had been tortured for 'a sadistic purpose.'

The investigation started on March 31 when the children's mother called police to report that her 12-year-old son was missing.

Police eventually found the boy asleep under a bush in a neighbor's yard and took him back to his home.

They said they found the boy and his nine siblings being forced to live in 'squalor and unsafe conditions'.

Police said an investigation into the family revealed a 'long and continuous history of severe physical and emotional abuse of the children.'

Both parents have denied they tortured or abused their children.

Allen, who remains in Solano County jail following his arrest on Friday, told KCRA that he was not a monster and claims he has never even spanked his children.

'I didn't do what they said I did,' Allen said. 'I'm not a cruel dad. I am the most loving parent that I could possibly be.'

He insisted that his children were brainwashed into thinking they had been abused.

Allen added that he was religious and practiced Kabbalah, noting that one of the investigating officers became 'extremely angry' when he noticed he kept his 'spiritual temple clean'.

'I am like the Indiana Jones when it comes to spirituality. I dig deep,' he said.

His wife also denied abusing their children and said they were both 'amazing' parents.

'I strive and I pride myself on being a good parent to my children,' Rogers told KGO.

My husband has a lot of tattoos, he looks like a scary individual, and that's why people are so quick to judge him. But absolutely not, my husband is an amazing person. I am an amazing mother.'

Rogers attempted to explain the 'squalor' officers found at their home, saying she had torn her house apart searching for her missing son.

'I was afraid that I could not find him. Once that fear sets in, you don't know what to do,' Rogers said.

Rogers, who was arrested March 31 and released after posting $10,000 bail, was booked for child neglect.

The children's father was booked on Friday for nine counts of felony torture and six counts of felony child abuse after specialists conducted interviews with the children.

He is being held in the Solano County Jail in lieu of $1.5 million bail.
