Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba has been outperformed in the Premier League by Philippe Coutinho despite Brazilian star leaving Liverpool for Barcelona in January

  • Paul Pogba was hooked in the 58th minute of Sunday's game against West Brom
  • Generally, the midfielder has had a difficult season for Manchester United
  • He has been outperformed for goals and creativity by Philippe Coutinho
  • Coutinho left Liverpool to join Barcelona in the January transfer window

It has not been an ideal season for Paul Pogba, who was hauled off after 58 minutes against West Brom on Sunday afternoon.

His excellent performance in the derby against Manchester City last weekend aside, he has regularly been dropped by Jose Mourinho and was even reportedly on the cusp of being sold in January.

But, even worse for the Manchester United midfielder, his stats this season have been unfavourably compared to a departed rival.

Pogba has only scored five goals — two of those came against City — all season in the Premier League.

The France international has also only provided 25 key passes all campaign for his team-mates, with a total of 34 chances created.

That has all come over the course of 22 appearances, with a period of his season between mid-September and early November disrupted by an injury.

Despite the injury, Pogba’s Premier League campaign has not been as disrupted as Philippe Coutinho’s was. While he was at Liverpool, he also failed to appear for the first four matches of the campaign due to a back injury.

And the now Barcelona man left the English top flight in the January transfer window.

That meant he only made a grand total of 14 appearances before leaving the Reds for the Nou Camp.

Even so, he is still managing to outperform Pogba in a number of key metrics over the Premier League season.

While he was still at Anfield, Coutinho scored seven goals in the league — two more than Pogba has managed.

He also played 34 key passes — compared to Pogba’s 25 — and provided six assists, which is a total of 40 chances created, still six more than the United man’s record.

This sort of unfavourable comparison explains why Thierry Henry questioned Pogba following the West Brom defeat: ‘As soon as the game started, something was weird. Where Pogba was playing, the atmosphere of the stadium, the team, it’s so weird from what we saw from that team a week ago.

‘The commitment, the desire, and I said, “Can Pogba do that all the time the way he played against City?” And the answer is nope.’

Mourinho also admitted his doubts over Pogba after the match: 'Paul had a yellow card and had a situation where he may have had another booking.

'But he was complicated like all the rest of the players, one more touch always.'
