The 30-year-old has made 346 appearances in his decade on Merseyside, establishing himself as a firm favourite on the Kop.

But appearances under Jurgen Klopp were starting to dwindle – he made 24 Premier League appearances for Liverpool last season but half of those were as a substitute.

He could have departed for Italy in January – Inter Milan were lining up a move – but opted to see out the season at Anfield.

Speaking in April on his future, Lucas said: 'I have been here long enough and if the time comes for me to go somewhere else I think I will leave with the feeling that I did everything I could.

'I have to analyse. I am getting to the stage of my career where I think I can help a lot, off the pitch of course, but on the pitch as well.

'I wouldn t like to just be around. I am 30, I am not 35, 36. I feel I have many years that I can still play at the top level.'

Lazio finished fifth in Serie A last season, qualifying for the Europa League.
