La Liga partners with McDonald's for FIFA 18 esports tournament which leads into the FIFA eWorld Cup

  • The tournament is one of La Liga's many planned video-game based projects 
  • It will be sponsored by McDonald's who will run their own competition as well
  • The winner of the tournament will qualify for the FIFA 18 Global Series Playoffs

La Liga has announced its first esports tournament, a FIFA 18 tournament which will feed directly into the game's biggest spectacle: The FIFA eWorld Cup.

Earlier this year, the top Spanish football division announced it would be would be involved with several esports projects in which football would be the main focus.

In that announcement they said that many of their sponsors had a keen interest in esports and in engaging its audience. It appears one of those is McDonald's who are the main sponsors for the FIFA tournament.

La Liga have also partnered with Spanish esports organisation Professional Videogame League (LVP) who have experience in multiple titles including League of Legends and CS:GO.

The first stage of the tournament (which begins March 19) will be online qualifiers which are open to anyone over the age of 16 and held through ArenaGG, LVP's gaming platform. This will then feed into the second stage (starting April 16) which will be an in-person tournament in LVP's venue in Barcelona.

That opening round will find 16 Xbox qualifiers and 15 PlayStation qualifiers for the final stages. The last PlayStation spot will be filled in by a seperate tournament ran by McDonalds.

The winner of the tournament will qualify for the EA SPORTS FIFA 18 Global Series Playoffs where player will compete for a place in the FIFA eWorld Cup.
