  • The Brazilian became the second most expensive footballer of all time this week

Liverpool were left with no option but to sell Philippe Coutinho this month despite trying everything to convince him to say, claims Jurgen Klopp.

The Brazilian star sealed his 'dream' move to Barcelona earlier this week to become the second most expensive footballer of all time.

Though the club were desperate to keep hold of the 25-year-old, Klopp reveals that the player was not prepared to stay at the club for the remainder of the season.

Speaking ahead of Sunday's clash with Manchester City, the Liverpool boss insisted: 'There was no other option but to sell Philippe Coutinho

'If there's someone who should be angry or disappointed it could be the manager, but I'm not because I know we tried absolutely everything to convince Phil to stay here.

'This was his dream. He would only leave Liverpool for one club. The club was fighting until the last second to keep Phil.

'It would have been difficult to say no and then use him in the second half of the season.

'Could he have helped us still? 100 per cent clear no chance. Clear he wasn't ready to do that anymore.'

Coutinho was denied a move to the Nou Camp last summer despite handing in a transfer request as Liverpool rejected all overtures from the Spanish club.

But his determination to make the move a reality proved too strong and a £145m offer from Barcelona was accepted this month.

Klopp also insisted that Liverpool do not need to replace the Brazilian playmaker in this transfer window.

'We don't have to replace him; what we have to do is step up. We will have 11 players, we've played fantastic football without Phil.

'First of all we have to replace him internally. We have our eyes open in this window but we won't do crazy things.'
