Jose Mourinho has made it clear to Real Madrid that they would be wasting their time in any attempt to lure David de Gea away from Old Trafford this summer.

The Manchester United No 1 has been in outstanding form this season, pulling off a string of high-profile stops in both the league and in Europe.

He has been a long-term target for the Spanish giants, and was once piece of botched paperwork away from joining the club in August 2015.

De Gea has put the disappointment of missing out on that move behind him and is focused on life in the North West, but has yet to sign on the dotted line for a new contract, with his current deal set to expire in 2019.

Despite his hesitation however, Mourinho is confident that his No 1 is here to stay.

'I think he will stay,' Mourinho told La Sexta.

'I don't know what Real Madrid's intentions are, but if I were them, I would think of another player.'

De Gea will be between the sticks again for United when they take on Sevilla in the second leg of their Champions League last 16 tie.

Mourinho's men drew the first leg 0-0 in Spain and, barring another 0-0 draw, must win at Old Trafford to progress.
