  • Danny Welbeck welcomes competition for in the striker's position at Arsenal
  • Welbeck has fallen down the pecking order since Alexandre Lacazette's arrival
  • The 27-year-old now has to battle it out with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as well
  • However, the forward claims it gives him 'more motivation' and he 'embraces it'

Danny Welbeck has insisted that the big-money arrivals of Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang have given him 'extra motivation' to succeed at Arsenal.

The former Manchester United striker fell down the pecking order at the Emirates after the £53million arrival of Lacazette last summer.

As Welbeck looked to battle it out with the Frenchman for a starting place up top, the English forward endured another setback after the Gunners only went on to break their transfer record again in January with the £56million signing of Aubameyang.

However, Welbeck welcomes competition at the club while he seeks to raise his own game.

The 27-year-old told Goal.com: 'It's competition and I embrace it. Ever since I was a young kid, I've been playing for an academy with scouts all over the world that are looking for top players to come in.

'You have competition throughout your whole life and it only makes you better. That competitive edge gives you extra motivation.'

Welbeck has failed to find the back of net since Arsenal's FA Cup tie with Nottingham Forest in January and his goalless run in the Premier League extends back even further to September.

However, injuries have prevented the England international since joining the Gunners after he picked up hip and groin injuries in recent years.

'Obviously the injuries have derailed me in the past, but it's gone now and there's nothing I can do about it,' added Welbeck. 'My mindset's just focused on looking forward, bettering myself, getting on the pitch, on the training pitch, doing what I can do to improve myself.

'When I get on that pitch, I want to make an impact. That's all I can say.'
