Brighton are weighing up a bid to land Celtic striker Moussa Dembele in the January window.
Dembele is rated by Celtic in the £30million bracket and Sportsmail understands Brighton – currently 12th in the English Premier League – are considering testing the water with an offer of £20m in next month’s window.
Moussa Dembele has netted eight goals in 16 appearances during an injury-hit campaign
The current club record transfer fee of £13.5m was paid for Colombian winger Jose Izquierdo back in August.
Despite a recurrence of a hamstring tear suffered in last season’s Scottish Cup semi-final, the 21-year-old Frenchman has still managed to accrue eight goals in 16 appearances this season, including a strike against Paris St Germain in the Champions League.
And the £400,000 bargain buy from Fulham harbours hopes of forcing his way into Didier Deschamps’ France squad for next summer’s World Cup Finals after firing three goals in 12 minutes for the Under-21s against Slovenia last month.
Brighton manager Chris Hughton wants to add some pace to the Seagulls' frontline
Celtic have no financial need to sell after qualifying for the last 32 of the Europa League by pipping Anderlecht to third place in their Champions League group.
As it is, Brendan Rodgers plans to strengthen his squad in January after acknowledging a gulf in quality at the elite level.
‘I am pretty clear where we are at as a squad and I am also realistic about what we can bring in,’ he said. ‘The challenge here is always to push and be the very best we can be despite the resources we have.
Dembele played 74 minutes as Celtic were beaten 1-0 by Anderlecht on Tuesday evening
‘At this (Champions League) level, we are nowhere near it. But at this level we have to find a way and try and represent Celtic and represent the nation the best we can.
‘It is very difficult. We will always rely on the collective, we will always rely on the team. There won’t be one player at this level who is a massive stand-out. Our star is the team. That is the way it will always be.’
As Sportsmail revealed on Wednesday, St Mirren winger Lewis Morgan and Dundee defender Jack Hendry feature amongst the targets after attending the Champions League defeat to the Belgian champions.
